Halfway through my second year studying Mathematics at university, I realised I wanted to change direction, start working full time, and to pursue a career as a quantity surveyor in the construction industry.
ISG stood out to me as an organisation I wanted to be a part of because of their inspiring vision and values. Their value to speak frankly really resonates with me, and they truly encourage people to not shy away from difficult conversations. The size of the organisation along with their ambitious vision also appealed to me, as I knew ISG would offer me the experiences and opportunities to become a successful quantity surveyor.
During the first year of my apprenticeship, I’ve been involved in delivering a large data centre for a customer in Crawley, UK. My responsibilities include managing the monthly costs of our temporary accommodation, logistics and temporary services. I’ve also had the opportunity to work alongside construction managers and technical services managers who have shared their experience and expertise with me, accelerating my knowledge and skills of both the industry and my role.
The one thing that really stands out at ISG is the fantastic training opportunities they offer and the importance they place on learning and development. My degree is fully funded by ISG, and I have plans to achieve the RICS qualification at the end of my apprenticeship. I’ve been on several training courses, and over the next few years, will be completing my site manager safety training scheme, first aid, risk assessment, and other health and safety related courses.
ISG also has a great structure in place to support me over the next five years. My line manager is a senior quantity surveyor, and he’s been through the same route I’m following, so he can really guide me through the process.
What I love most about my role is the variety of work I get to be involved with. Not two days are ever the same, and it’s incredibly rewarding to overcome the challenges we’re faced with. If I had known about a career in construction when I was younger and finishing my A-Levels, I would have taken this route. The apprentice programme allows me to get a degree, have fun at work, and is financially beneficial at the same time – I cannot recommend ISG’s apprenticeship programme enough.
